چکیده

Counting benthic species from sea floor imagery is useful for evaluating the state of the local ecosystem. These images being taken by digital still Cameras mounted on ROVs (Remote Operating Vehicles) are used to capture images of animals on the seabed. The overlap between images must be detected in order to eliminate the possibility of counting the same individual more than once. In order to prevent such an error, a feature-based Mosaicing method using SIFT has been employed to find these overlapping regions. This paper will present some initial results on creating a mosaic from images of the seabed for counting purpose. Key WordsImage Processing, Image Registration, Image Mosaicing, Homography Transformation.

Underwater Video Mosaicing for Seabed Mapping

This paper presents improved techniques and applications in mosaicing of underwater video images. The applications are of use to many marine scientists. High resolution seabed maps are created. The improvements in the processing relate to removal of interframe variability and lighting, speed up of the mosaicing process and improved accuracy in the estimation of the transformation parameters. Re...

Impact of scallop dredging on benthic megafauna: a comparison of damage levels in captured and non-captured organisms

The impact of scallop dredging on benthic megafauna was assessed by direct observation of damage, both in the bycatch and in organisms encountering dredges but not captured. Damage was assessed using a simple 4point scale adapted for different taxonomic groups. Experimental dredging was undertaken on a scallop fishing ground in the north Irish Sea, off the Isle of Man. Divers were deployed imme...

Characterizing the deep insular shelf coral reef habitat of the Hind Bank marine conservation district (US Virgin Islands) using the Seabed autonomous underwater vehicle

The benthic communities of the deep insular shelf at the Hind Bank marine conservation district (MCD), an important spawning aggregation site for groupers, were studied with the Seabed autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) at depths between 32 and 54m. Four digital phototransects provided data on benthic species composition and abundance of the insular shelf off St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Wit...

Seabed methane emissions and the habitat of frenulate tubeworms on the Captain Arutyunov mud volcano (Gulf of Cadiz)

Submarine mud volcanism represents an important pathway for methane from deeper reservoirs to the surface, where it enters the benthic carbon cycle. To quantify overall methane release from the Captain Arutyunov mud volcano (CAMV) and to assess the contribution of macrobenthic seep organisms to the regulation of the benthic methane flux, we linked water column methane concentrations, seabed met...

The most common sponges on the Great Barrier Reef seabed , Australia , include species new to science ( Phylum Porifera )

We describe two new species amongst the most common sponges living on the seabed (inter-reef) of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) collected during a multi-agency survey (GBR Seabed Biodiversity Project 2003–2006) of the shelf benthic biota using a trawl and dredge at 1254 sites. More than 1,200 sponge morphospecies (operational taxonomic units or OTUs) were recognised, many of which are potentially...
